A FUTURE CUT SHORT: THE LESSON THE WORLD MUST LEARN FROM THE STRAY BULLET THAT KILLED A WAEC STUDENT IN IBADAN BY MERCY ROLAND FOR MERCYSPEAKS

Today, in Ibadan, Oyo State, the dreams of a young boy were silenced by a stray bullet — a victim not of war, but of systemic failure.

He was not in a conflict zone. He was not protesting. He was simply on his way to write his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with the hope of a brighter future — until a bullet, allegedly fired by a police officer chasing suspected fraudsters, ended his life.

This is more than a news story; this is a call for conscience.

At MercySpeaks, we mourn this tragic loss and use our voice to call the world to attention:

1. Every Child Deserves Protection, Not Peril

That child could have been yours. He could have been any one of our sons or daughters. Every child has a right to life, to safety, and to their dreams. When a system meant to protect begins to destroy, it is time for urgent reform.

2. Reckless Policing Is Not Justice

Shooting into a civilian area in the name of chasing criminals is a violation of duty. It is not bravery — it is negligence. We need a Nigeria where our protectors are trained to value every life, especially the innocent.

3. When One Child Falls, We All Must Rise

We must rise as parents, educators, advocates, and leaders. We must demand policies that prioritize human life. We must raise boys and girls who grow up knowing that their lives matter, and that justice is not optional.

4. Let Grief Birth Change

Let the death of this young student not be in vain. Let it birth a movement of intentional parenting, of accountable governance, of responsible law enforcement, and of safe spaces for learning.

To the grieving family — MercySpeaks stands with you. To the child whose voice was silenced — we will speak your truth. To the world — wake up. A generation is watching.

We must do better. We must be better.

Let this tragedy be the last.
