View all magazinesSIDE BY SIDE FAITH MOVEMENT FOR GENDER JUSTICE HITS AKURE STREETS, CAMPAIGNS AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE
As part of efforts to end Gender Based Violence,(GBV) in Ondo State, a global interfaith movement, Side by Side Faith Movement for Gender Justice, made up of faith based organizations (FBOs) and traditional leaders on Monday, 25th November, 2024 hit major streets in Akure to create awareness about GBV.
The late morning walk which began at the popular Akure City Hall through major streets to the main market was led by the Co- Chair, Side By Side, South West Nigeria, Dr. Ebenezer Oke.
Dr. Oke said as part of the implementation of the proposed activities/interventions of the “Promoting Climate Action for Gender Justice” and in alignment with project objectives, the global 16 days activism campaign known as “The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” is prioritized in this project implementation.
He also noted that the awareness walk tagged: "Towards Beijing +30: UNITE to End Violence Against Women and Girls" is a global campaign and movement to mark progress toward the commitments made at the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995.

Dr. Oke who further observed that the "Beijing +30" indicates the upcoming 30th anniversary of this milestone, set for 2025 stressing that it aligns with UN Women's UNiTE by 2030 Campaign to End Violence Against Women, a global effort initiated by the UN Secretary-General in 2008 to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.
On some of the goals, he said it will afford the opportunity to reflect on progress made, evaluate advancements and challenges since the Beijing Conference, particularly in addressing violence against women and girls.
Other goals include opportunities to raise awareness, advocate
for zero tolerance and strengthen laws, policies, and actions to combat violence against women among others.
"Key issue for today is ending gender based violence and promoting gender equity, and equality. We are collaborating with others who are also doing the same work"
"Statistics have shown that one out of three women have been violated in one way or the other and this is not right. That is why we want an end to women's silence, the stigma that had always been there", he added just as he admonished those who find themselves abused in any ways to speak up and to also encourage others do same.
He said the group as part of the campaign is involved in the 16 days of Activism Against GBV, an annual global initiative from November 25 to December 10 to help create awareness at the grassroots and engage policy makers to prioritize women's safety and rights.
Also on the team were members of Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigerian (FOMWAN) led by their state Chairperson, Alhaja Medinat Omikunle, members of Women Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) led by Mrs Arogun Yinka and the former WOWICAN Chairperson, Deaconess Grace Kehinde Ademokoya, former CAN Chairman and the Executive Director of Center for Peaceful Home Initiative. Rev Dr. Ayo Oladapo, the Aro of Isinkan community, Chief James Oluwole Kolawole among other groups who took turns to address the public on the need to protect women and girl's rights.
